What is Transformative Leadership?
Transformative Leadership (TL) is about making holistic, systemic change. It’s not about pointing to a problem ‘over there’, walking up to said problem and providing a solution. Or gathering a group of people to walk over to said problem and facilitate or motivate problem-solving. Michael Jackson’s song, “Man in the Mirror” is about self-reflection and self-awareness.
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change
A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change
There is a sweet story about Gandhi and change:
A woman brought her daughter to Gandhi and said that she ate too much sugar. She wanted Gandhi to tell her to stop. Gandhi said to bring the child back next week. The next week she brought the child and Gandhi said, “Stop eating sugar, child.” And the child did. A month later, the woman came back and said, “My child has done what you asked, but why could you not have spoken to her the first time we came?” Gandhi replied, “A week earlier, I was still eating sugar.”
Change. Shifts. Transformation.
These are just other ways of saying: I want something else than what I have right now. I want to be ___________ (richer, skinnier, happier, calmer, more organized, more creative, doing my life purpose, etc.) Paving the way for these new experiences can really only happen from the inside out and not the other way around.
Inside-out change is about identity
Outside-in change is about behaviour.
Identity is the I AM
Behaviour is the I CAN
Transformation is about structural or systemic change. Basically - it comes from your inner core. And it’s effortless. It is not willpower or post-it notes or hiding something somewhere in the house. It is not about a commitment or a reward or a punishment. It’s about being and embodying without hesitation. Think of your brain as a set of legos. If you want something different, then simply disassemble your current structure and rebuild something new.
Change isn’t easy. And working with identity shifts are the most challenging thing you could possibly do. And also the most permanent. When you change your current structure to the structure you desire at an identity level, you are creating transformation. This level of inner transformation are the paths that lead you to exactly where you want to go.
But here is the crazy part - when you do structural change, that transformation that you underwent is transformative! Why? As you begin to shift who you are, you begin to have a different set of rules. You may not do things the way you used to! And that effect may impact the way people interact with you; perhaps with more respect, more kindness, more boundaries. And they get to notice a change in you and that may bring more awareness within themselves. And now they may be inspired to experience the new states they are witnessing in you. Now they themselves embark on a journey of transformation. And...you’ve created a domino effect of healing and change!
